Understanding MSME registration in India and its benefits

Micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs) form the backbone of the Indian economy. They contribute significantly to the country’s industrial output, exports and employment. The government of India provides several incentives and benefits to promote the growth of MSMEs in the country. An important step for MSMEs is to obtain registration under the MSME Development Act 2006. This registration helps MSMEs gain access to multiple government schemes and benefits.

What is MSME registration?

MSME registration refers to the process of registering your enterprise under the Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises Development (MSMED) Act, 2006. The Ministry of MSME provides this registration to businesses that meet the investment and turnover criteria for micro, small and medium enterprises.

Based on investment in plant, machinery and equipment, MSMEs are classified into three categories –

Micro enterprise: Investment up to Rs 1 crore and turnover up to Rs 5 crore

Small enterprise: Investment up to Rs 10 crore and turnover up to Rs 50 crore

Medium enterprise: Investment up to Rs 50 crore and turnover up to Rs 250 crore

Eligibility for MSME registration

To be eligible for MSME registration in India, your business must comply with the following criteria.

It must be a manufacturing, production, processing or preservation enterprise

OR

It must be engaged in providing or rendering services

In addition, the enterprise should meet the investment and turnover limits specified for micro, small or medium enterprises. Both new and existing businesses can apply for MSME registration.

Documents required

  • Aadhaar card of the proprietor/director/partner
  • PAN card of the enterprise
  • Bank account details
  • Details of the enterprise including investment, turnover, products/services etc.

No physical documents need to be submitted. All details are filled online on the Udyam Registration portal.

Registration process

The entire process of MSME registration is online and free of cost on the Udyam portal (udyamregistration.gov.in). Key steps are listed below –

  1. Visit the Udyam Registration portal and click on “Register Now”
  1. Enter your Aadhaar number, validate it via OTP and proceed to enter your PAN details
  1. Select the type of organization Proprietorship, Partnership, LLP, Pvt Ltd etc
  1. Fill the registration form with all enterprise details including investment and turnover
  1. Submit the form and upload scanned documents if needed
  1. Verify registration via OTP and print the system generated Udyam certificate

The registration is fully digital and no physical application or documents are required. You will receive the signed MSME registration certificate with a unique Udyam registration number within 1-2 working days on your registered email ID.

Registration tips

  • Carefully enter the investment and turnover details as per your financial statements
  • Keep your Aadhaar, PAN and bank account handy before starting the online form
  • Choose the apt category manufacturing or service enterprise
  • List all major activities/products/services provided by your enterprise
  • Registration is fully online; no need to submit physical documents

Renewal and amendment

MSME registration does not require any renewal or periodic filings. The Udyam certificate issued is permanent without an expiry date. However, you can amend or update details like investment, turnover, address etc. on the Udyam Portal anytime.

MSME registration unlocks a gamut of incentives, subsidies and schemes by the centre and state governments.
